چکیده

A micro/nano-scale computational contact mechanics model is proposed to study the adhesive contact between deformable bodies. To model adhesive contact, an interatomic interaction potential is incorporated into the framework of nonlinear continuum mechanics. The ensuing contact model is cast into an efficient finite element formulation which is implemented using an updated Lagrangian approach. The scaling of the model with respect to its geometrical size and the strength of adhesion is investigated. The proposed computational contact model is validated by a comparison with the analytical JKR and Maugis–Dugdale models. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Finite Element Simulation of Contact Mechanics of Cancer Cells in Manipulation Based on Atomic Force Microscopy

The theory of contact mechanics deals with stresses and deformations which arise when the surfaces of two solid bodies are brought into contact. In elastic deformation contact occurs over a finite area. A regular method for determining the dimensions of this area is Hertz Contact Model. Appearance of atomic force microscope results in introduction of Contact ...

Adhesive and Nonadhesive, Large Strain AFM Indentation of Rubber-like Materials

Atomic force microscopy is an established technique for probing the local elastic properties of materials at submicron scales. In some cases, linear elastic contact theories based on Hertzian and adhesive contact mechanics suffice to model the indentation process. However, at the large strains that are common in many nanoindentation experiments, the linear models become invalid. A force-indenta...

Mechanics of interaction and atomic-scale wear of amplitude modulation atomic force microscopy probes.

Wear is one of the main factors that hinders the performance of probes for atomic force microscopy (AFM), including for the widely used amplitude modulation (AM-AFM) mode. Unfortunately, a comprehensive scientific understanding of nanoscale wear is lacking. We have developed a protocol for conducting consistent and quantitative AM-AFM wear experiments. The protocol involves controlling the tip-...

A Technique for the Experimental Determination of the Length and Strength of Adhesive Interactions Between Effectively Rigid Materials

To describe adhesion between bodies of known arbitrary shape and known elastic properties, contact mechanics models require knowledge or assumptions of a minimum of two parameters, the strength of the adhesive interaction (characterized by the intrinsic work of adhesion Wadh, int) and the length scale of the interaction (described by the range of adhesion z0). One parameter can easily be measure...

An Approximate Model for the Adhesive Contact of Viscoelastic Spheres

We present a simple model for the adhesive contact of viscoelastic bodies relevant for soft solids. This approach couples the interaction zone creep and the contact zone stress relaxation through a transform of the interaction stresses g(a). We show that g(a), which is proportional to the interaction stress intensity factor, can be extracted from experimentally determined contact variables and ...
